Hello! I am a 23-year resident of Deephaven, living at 4167 Heathcote Rd, Wayzata, MN 55391 with my wife, three daughters, and our two certified therapy dogs, Boden and Truckee. I am seeking the role of Mayor of Deephaven and would be grateful for your write-in vote.
I have served as a member of the Boat Committee that evaluated options for additional resources, gave ample consideration to alternative plans, and helped draft a revision to the "10-year rule" that would have been equitable to all parties involved, including non-boaters in the community. Unfortunately, this plan was never given an audience at the City Council as the mayor felt the issue had been settled 15 years ago!
My further leadership involvement has been serving as a council member at Oak Knoll Lutheran Church for 2 years prior to becoming the President for 4 years. My tenure at my church included finding a replacement head Pastor, developing a financial workout program to resolve debt and establishment of a 10-year vision and plan for our church.
My wife and I are both graduates of Gustavus Adolphus College (1985) and I have added executive education from Harvard Law in the area of complex negotiations and conflict resolution.
The reason I'm running for mayor is that I'm passionate, and compassionate about our village of Deephaven. We fell in love with the charm of the community and deference to maintaining a sense of community and scale, with neighborhoods that felt like they belonged and citizens that have the decency to respect each other.
I'm not a single-issue candidate and welcome an open and honest dialogue on a wide variety of issues, including overbuilding on tiny lots, encroachments on lot lines, tenure on city slips, access and availability bike paths, sidewalks, and most importantly, a vision for the future of Deephaven.
A vision, a plan, and the necessary community involvement and communication are needed to help guide the discussion now and into the future.
I would appreciate your support and I look forward to working on behalf of the wonderful people of Deephaven.
My wife and I have lived in Deephaven for over 30 years. We have one daughter who attended both St. Therese and Minnetonka High School.
I’ve been a licensed real estate broker specializing in investment properties for 23 years, and we own two homes.
I have experience managing rental homes in 6 counties in Minnesota and 13 cities and own vacant land and farmland in 3 counties in Minnesota & one county in Florida. I also own 5 wells in three counties so am very knowledgeable about water issues.
These experiences have given me an extensive education in:
1) How cities plan for the future and ensure their zoning ordinances work to maintain their vision.
2) The various and creative ways to collaborate with utility and internet providers to improve service without increasing costs.
My knowledge of what works and doesn’t work comes from seeing over 100 cities in Minnesota governing land use.
Deephaven is a small community with opportunities we have not addressed to keep our residential taxes down.
Improving Chowen’s corner to improve the appearance and use of our “city center” will also increase that tax base. That will allow us to formulate long term plans to pay for our infrastructure needs over time.
Deephaven is blessed with citizens who have incredible expertise and talent. By keeping the citizens informed of the issues of the day as they are being discussed, citizens will have an opportunity to come forward and be part of the discussion.
J.D. a nickname for James Dudley which was given at birth, my mom actually spelled it "Jade," which I still use with friends and Minnetonka Yacht Club.
I am a third-generation resident of Deephaven. I grew up in Deephaven Park, three blocks from where we presently live, 18900 Rutledge Road. I have raced sailboats since I was 8 years old, and have served on the board of MYC for many years.
I bought my first home in Deephaven Park in 1978 and married my wife in 1981. We have three children. Our oldest Judd lives in Boulder, CO with his wife and our two grandchildren. Our daughter Sarah lives in Minneapolis. My wife, Julie, and our youngest, Michael, are better known than me as they are often out walking (Michael has CP and is in a wheelchair and is super social).
I am an extreme moderate, meaning I am passionate and see both sides extremely well. I am an architect who owned a firm in downtown Minneapolis that was nationally renowned for both our retail design and our golf clubhouse designs. We grew to 47 people, and I discovered the stress and travel nationally were not good for me. I had a massive heart attack and quadruple by-pass at age 40. After 18 years of being very sick from heart failure, I received a heart transplant six years ago. I have also designed over 200 homes and additions - many in Deephaven.
I am running for council because I believe Deephaven needs my knowledge and background to move forward. I believe our ordinances are outdated and need a full review. I believe Chowen’s Corner needs to be studied and prepare for redevelopment when the time comes.
As an architect I viewed ordinances around the country as “law” thus I saw my designs were oblogated to conform with the property. A variance was only used if the property did not allow for conformance to any building proposed. I am appalled at how ofter variances are given for the builder and/or developer and not the citizens.
I owe this community so much, as many have helped my family over the years while I went for many years unable to earn an income. It is that very mix of people and support that makes a community. Which is why my goal is to ensure that the community remains close, informed and involved. As I said, I am passionate, and I believe Deephaven should remain the best community in the cities.
